ACL Tear The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a thick ligament inside the knee that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). The ACL is one of the most frequently injured ligaments in the knee. 1 in 3000 Americans suffer ACL tears every year; 80% of them are non-contact.
Complete tears of the ACL are usually repaired surgically; however, some people may function without repair. Rehabilitation of ACL tears focuses on improving strength of the thigh muscles. Balance exercises are important, as well as a very gradual return to activity.
