Ankle Sprain An ankle sprain is simply a stretching of the ligaments supporting the ankle joint. The most common type of ankle sprain is "lateral" (on the outside part of the ankle), and usually result from inversion, or twisting the ankle inward. Ankle sprains usually heal with rest and protection and gradual return to activity. Early management of ankle sprains with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is important in minimizing the swelling and facilitating a quick recovery. The muscles around the ankle are usually strengthened after the swelling and inflammation decrease. Balance exercises are also very important in preventing re-injury.
