Short Description
Foam rolling is a relatively new therapeutic approach, but early research suggests that it can help improve range of motion and muscle performance and aid in recovery after exercise. Questions remain, however, about the extent to which the effects involve myofascial mechanisms.
Drs. Dave Behm and Duane Button teamed up to provide this article in Training and Conditioning magazine about their research on Thera-Band Roller Massagers and Foam Rollers.
David Behm PhD, and Duane Button PhD, both with Memorial University in Newfoundland Canada, are the leading researchers in myofascial rolling. Their experiments were the first to quantify improvements in range of motion from myofascial rolling.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is common after strenuous or unaccustomed exercise. Muscle soreness appears about 24 to 48 hours after the activity, and sometimes takes a few additional days to subside. Researchers in Denmark wanted to see if the TheraBand Roller Massager could be effective in reducing DOMS.
Researchers recently published a study on the effects of self-massage using the TheraBand Roller Massager. The purpose of their study was to compare static calf stretching to roller massage of the calf on ankle range of motion, muscle activation, and balance.
